Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Automobiles, walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.

Law enforcement say they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.

The substance had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Law enforcement then located many other marked cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Police report initial examinations show the substance was probably blood from a person.

"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; investigators are currently not informed of any injuries in association with the event," they stated.

Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.

An important political figure commented the incident made him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.

"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he posted on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
