Conservative responses to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise significant concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Release
But, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
Yet some do not, including prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that included no previously unseen data.
