Pentagon Investigation Concludes Hegseth Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by disclosing classified intelligence in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The chat group in question included particulars about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen against Houthi militants. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not approved for handling classified information.

Potential Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report determined that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The source said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be made public in the coming days.
