Social Media Influencers Fueling Parallel Market for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug
A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss medications is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Investigational Drug Acquiring Traction Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Followers are urged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.
Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of next-day UK delivery. Vendors promote the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
This medication is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help patients lose up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Express Concerns
However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is worrisome and could lead to individuals administering products of uncertain source.
Several professionals said the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the rising price of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Enforcement
Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Some influencers try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but advertising and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to fines, legal action or prison.
Platform Reaction and Material Removal
According to TikTok, the platform has taken down violative material and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The company stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Online Trading Operations
Research also found groups with up to 9,000 members marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, filled with images of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at residence.
Within minutes of joining one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.
Product Information and Pricing
Within these groups, messages show black plastic parcels with postal service labels, stating to include new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at £160 for 20mg. When asked how much time a injector should be used, sellers give contradictory answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Security Measures
A representative for Telegram said it regularly moderated dangerous material on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Cautions
“Individuals are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not contain what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in demand to current cost increases for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake injections are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she said.
Her team has already encountered patients injured by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said the doctor. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Statement
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially significant health risks”.
