The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
