Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He dreads the notion of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
